The Querdenker and agriculture
In 1992 my wife and I inherited a small farm with 3 cows, 3 pigs and 20 hens in the Mühlviertel. Short after that we began to expand and leased further agricultural areas.
In 1993 we changed over to organic farming with extensive mother cow breeding. After some years the farm became too small and we decided to purchase a bigger farm in the Mühlviertel. We enhanced our organic farming and are currently farming 43 hectare grass- and 6 hectare woodland.
Meanwhile we split our farm.
One part is the above mentioned extensive organic farming and the other is an animal sanctuary.
Within the organic farming 60 cows, 20 goats, ten sheep, 20 pigs und 50 hens live with us.
The animal sanctuary gives a home to 3 horses, 8 donkeys, 1 pig, some ducks and cats as well as some guinea pigs, rabbits and fish.
As we never intended to run an ordinary farm we developed an agricultural firm in which we combine organic, extensive and species-appropriate animal husbandry on the one hand with job opportunities for people with special needs on the other.
Unfortunately we have to butcher most of the animals to secure our economic viability but until this point of time we can at least guarantee the species-appropriate animal husbandry which is not oriented on profit maximization.
